Your first X-WARRIORS race is coming up, the excitement is building – but what should you wear? When tackling water, mud, rocky terrain, and steep climbs, the right clothing can make all the difference. Here are our tips to ensure you're fully prepared for race day.
Avoid cotton at all costs. Cotton absorbs water – whether from an obstacle or your own sweat and stays heavy and cold. This can not only be uncomfortable but also impact your performance. Instead, opt for functional clothing made from synthetic materials that wick moisture and dry quickly.
Your shoes are the most important piece of gear. While you can run in regular running shoes, you’ll quickly notice their limitations in mud, inclines, and water. OCR-specific shoes with deep treads offer the best traction. Make sure they fit well, are breathable, and drain water quickly. Test them beforehand – blisters or ill-fitting shoes can ruin your race
Opt for tight-fitting compression pants or shorts. They help reduce muscle fatigue, keep you warm in cold conditions, and prevent chafing. If you prefer looser clothing, make sure it's not too baggy or loose clothes, as they can get caught on obstacles or retain unnecessary water and mud.
Short or long sleeves? That depends on the temperature and your preference. A tight-fitting performance shirt protects against chafing and allows for full range of motion. In colder temperatures, you can add a light extra layer that dries quickly. If you want to protect yourself from scrapes, padded arm sleeves are a good option.
Long, durable compression socks are a game-changer. They protect your shins from scrapes and help drain water from your shoes faster. Avoid cotton socks – they retain moisture and increase the risk of blisters.
A headband helps keep sweat and mud out of your eyes. Hats or caps should only be worn in extreme sun or cold, as they can become heavy and uncomfortable. Gloves? That’s personal preference. Some athletes find them helpful for obstacles, while others find them a hindrance. If you try gloves, they should have a non-slip grip and drain water well.
Every athlete has individual preferences, but one thing is certain: the right clothing can make the difference between an amazing race and a tough challenge. Test your gear before race day – that’s the only way to know what works for you. Get ready, give it your all, and enjoy the X-WARRIORS OCR experience!
